In the previous blog we discovered the dynamic work of the digestive system. Our focus in this blog is a self-care routine for the cleansing of the digestive system via the colon.
The colon is designed to keep itself in good condition and should cleanse itself at least once a day. However, in today’s world, that can be a challenge. The modern diet simply does not provide the needed cleansing tools to keep the digestive system, specifically the colon, healthy.
These selfcare routines can be use in the privacy of your home. You are uniquely made and it is advisable to check in with a healthcare professional before you make any major changes in your healthcare routine.
The INs and OUTs of cleansing
The OUTs
Cleansing involves flushing the colon with fluids to remove waste. What comes out during a cleanse? Toxins and waste, mostly in the form of faeces and water, leave your body. Through this action your body benefits because:
- it improves the work of the immune system
- it improves digestion
- you may lose extra weight
- it boosts your energy
- it reduces your risk of colon cancer
The INs
There may be risks associated with what you take “in” for colon cleansing and with how regularly you do a cleanse. Your body may have trouble adjusting and experience side effects such as:
- nausea
- vomiting
- dizziness
- dehydration
- electrolyte imbalances
- cramping
If any of these symptoms arise, stop the cleansing immediately. It can cause digestive damage and other health risks. Overuse of the intake of flushing material can quickly lead to chronic constipation or even bowel injury. Talk to your doctor for medical advice.
Cleansing
There are a few ways to cleanse the colon. A natural cleanse can be done at home, or you can purchase an over-the-counter cleansing product or you could get an enema (colonic irrigation).
Here are a few natural cleansing suggestions to use at home.
1. Drink plenty of water
Water maintains digestive health by flushing out toxins from your stomach and keeping you hydrated. Start your day by drinking lukewarm water first thing in the morning, which helps to get a clean and clear colon. During the day, drink at least 6-8 glasses of water to remain hydrated and balance the digestive system.
2. Saltwater flush
The saltwater flush also contains water and has a quicker effect. Drink the mixture quickly on an empty stomach, before eating breakfast. In a few minutes, you may feel an urge to go to the bathroom.
Recipe: stir 2-3 teaspoons of Himalayan pink or sea salt into a glass of lukewarm water. Make sure that the salt is entirely dissolved in the water. You can add two teaspoons of lemon juice for flavour.
Use this flush only if you do not have regular bowel movements. Avoid the saltwater flushes if you have high blood pressure and must keep your sodium intake low.
3. Probiotics
Probiotics introduce good bacteria into the gut with the help of fibre and resistant starches. It promotes regularity and fights inflammation. You can buy probiotic pills over the counter.
Apple cider vinegar is also a probiotic that uses enzymes and acids to suppress harmful bacteria and cleanse the colon.
Recipe for apple cider vinegar with raw honey:
- 240 ml of lukewarm water
- Two tablespoons of raw, unfiltered honey
- Two tablespoons of quality apple cider vinegar
Make sure to consume it right away. This mixture works best when you drink it right before going to bed. You may expect colon spasms the next day, signalling a bowel movement.
4. Intermittent fasting
Intermittent fasting can support the body’s ability to detoxify naturally. It resets your body’s cellular turnover, increases the elimination of wastes and enhances the healing processes of the body.
Use with the utmost caution.
5. Herbal teas
Laxative herbs like psyllium, aloe vera, marshmallow root, and slippery elm may help with constipation. However, use them sparingly as they can be harmful. Other herbs like ginger, garlic, and cayenne pepper contain antimicrobial phytochemicals that also can help with colon cleansing. Be aware that the overuse of laxatives can reduce the body’s ability to move stool and can result in chronic constipation.
At the end of the tunnel
We are dependent on a healthy colon to live a life full of energy and joy! So get the bad stuff out and the good stuff in!
